Celgene's Revlimid positive in maintenance trials (Reuters)

(05-21-2010 03:14 PM)
Reuters - Two major studies of Celgene Corp's multiple myeloma drug Revlimid showed that when taken as maintenance therapy following stem cell transplantation it reduced the risk of disease progression by more than 50 percent.

Definition from OMD (Online Medical Dictionary):

maintenance therapy

Extended drug therapy, usually at a diminished dose, administered after a disease has been brought under control. Maintenance therapy is utilised when a complete cure is not possible, and a disease is likely to recur if therapy is halted.

(09 Oct 1997)

Maintenance therapy is a medical therapy that is designed to help a primary treatment succeed.[1] For example, maintenance chemotherapy may be given to people who have a cancer in remission in an attempt to prevent a relapse.[2] This form of treatment is also a common approach for the management of many incurable, chronic diseases such as periodontal disease, Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.[3][4]
