Founded in 1977, NCPDP is a not-for-profit, ANSI-accredited, Standards Development Organization with over 1575 members representing virtually every sector of the pharmacy services industry.
1977 - NCPDP is incorporated. Wholesalers begin to ship the Universal Claim Form. NCPDP signs agreement with NABP to maintain the pharmacy file list.
1978 - First NCPDP logo introduced.
1983 - NCPDP members adopt first Bylaws.
1986 - Registration of the NCPDP Signature Log is granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
1995 - First issue of Council Connection magazine published and www.ncpdp.org is unveiled.
1996 - NCPDP application for accreditation was approved by the American National Standards Institue (ANSI). NCPDP mentioned in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
1997 - NCPDP held its first Educational Forum in San Francisco, California. The Telecommunication Standard v3.2 became the first NCPDP standard approved as an American National Standard.
2000 - Telecommunication Standard v5.1 was named the official standard for pharmacy claims in HIPAA. The electronic newsletter, NCPDP Now, was introduced.
2001 - New NCPDP facility opened in Scottsdale, Arizona.
2002 - NCPDP announces the creation of HCIdea, a standardized prescriber identifier. This database product identifies prescribers in the United States for the purposes of electronic healthcare claims adjudication.
2003 - NCPDP named in the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act (MMA).
2005 - Two NCPDP standards named by CMS in proposed rules for e-Prescribing under Title I of the MMA.
2006 - NCPDP officially named as an authorized Electronic File Interchange Organization (EFIO) by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
2008 - NCPDP announces a new brand name for the NCPDP Pharmacy Database. NCPDP dataQ is the industry's trusted source for intelligent pharmacy data. This suite of database products provides healthcare stakeholders with the most up-to-date and in-depth pharmacy information available.
The NCPDP membership is the most diverse cross-section of healthcare executives and professionals found in one institution. NCPDP participants include virtually all segments involved in the pharmacy services sector of healthcare. The membership is broken into three categories.
